Year 4 Topics
Autumn
In the Autumn term our topics will be based first on a book called ‘Mr Penguin and the Lost Treasure’ and then on a short film called 'Soar’. In term 1, the children will learn to use back stitch in order to sew toy penguins. Their learning in science will also link to the topic as they will learn about animal classification. In term 2, the children will use their learning in science about electricity to add light up parts to their own flying machines that they will make in DT. In art, they will focus on painting which will be inspired by the pop artist Roy Lichtenstein – painting a flying machine in movement.
Spring
In the Spring term our topics will be based on Ancient Greece and the Amazon Rainforest. They will learn about their lives and customs, and then use atlases to develop their understanding of where Greece is in the world, comparing Ancient Greece to modern day. In art, they will learn how to draw figures in movement, using Greek pots as inspiration. In term 4, they will learn about deforestation and how we can help this situation. In science, they will think about plants and how they grow and produce their own food through photosynthesis. They will also use the rainforest as inspiration for their art work as they will create their own designs to print.
Summer
In the Summer term, our first topic will be based on a short film called ‘Lighthouse’. In geography, the children will use coordinates and compass point to plan routes. They will learn about states of matter in science and use this knowledge to write about the water cycle. After half term, the children will learn about the Romans and the invasion of Britain. They will learn about Roman settlements in the UK and Roman numerals. The topic will also include a trip to a Roman site. We will learn woodwork skills in order to make a model catapult. They will also make Italian recipes.
